Varakkal sree durga devi temple is a main durga temple in kerala and it is believed that the temple was actually established by lord parasurama, according to hindu mythologies kerala was created by lord parasurma, this is one of the avathramas among the 10 of lord mahavishnu. varakkal sree durga devi temple is a main pilgrim center in kozhikode and one of the main 108 durga devi temples in kerala. goddess durga is the principal deity of the temple and also some sub deities which include lord ayyppa, ganesh. dakshinamoorthy etc. it is believed that the deity goddess durga is presnt here at theertharoopam to bless the devotees.
In early days the temple was a cultural center for promoting arts and cultural heritage. the present architecture of the temple was rebuilt by the zamorins of malabar region, before that period it was in destroyed state, the temple was rebuilt by them and make initiation for conducting the daily rituals in the temple, today the varakkal sree durga devi temple is managed by 7 zamorin family in malabar. there are many offerings in the temple to have the blessings from goddess durga which includes padi vilkkku, ney vilakku, pushpanjali, santhanagopla archana,mahadivedyam etc.
Vavu bali is the special occasion conducted at this temple, this is the ancestral rites. the poojas for the bali is hosts at the varakkal beach. navarathri festival is the another one which celebrates at a mass level in the varkkal durga devi temple. it is believed that this is the last devi temple installed bylord parasurama. the temple is opens at 5.00 am for morning rituals and closed 12.00 clock. evening rituals start at 5.30 pm till 8’o clock. kozhikode is the nearest city having both the rail head and bus station connecting easily to other cities, located at a distance of km. calicut international airport is about 27 km away
