Vaikom mahedava temple is one of the main shiva temples in kerala has a unique feature which, as a shiva temple it also hold the shrine of vishnu with the equal prominence, this is a rare fact in kerala temples. there three main shiva temples in kottayam district, they are ettumanoor, kadathuruthy and vaikom. these three has a great importance and shares equal prominence. it says that the visiting of these three temple before noon is a great thing for the devotees for fulfill their ambitions. vaikom mahadeva kshethram is an ancient hindu temple in kerala. vaikom ashtami is the most celebrated festival here. which commonly referred as vaikathastami by the devotees, the deity lord shiva called vaikathappan for the devotees.

Vaikathastami is usually falls in malayalam month vrichikam, it may be november or december in gregorian calendar according to the malayalam month. this is the temple festival at vaikom lats for 1 days, the particular day of ashtami is referred as vaikathastami that is the janmashtami day of lord krishna, according to the hindu mythology, it says that years back a saint named vyghrapada prayed lord shiva for long years, a few years later lord shiv and his consort parvathy devi appeared in front of him, the day that lord shiva offer him the darsan was the day of krishna ashtami, so that vaikom ashtami celebrate to memories this.

The twelve day festival lasts in ashtami day, the festival initiate after the flag staff at the first day, on seventh day the temple procession is carried out in the temple with the imaginary idol of lord shiva called thidambu. the festival end after the ashtami day celebration. many art performances will increment the color of the festival. a lot of the devotees from all the parts of the country will take a part in this colorful festival.
