Papanasanathar temple is an ancient shiva temple constructed during chola dynasty,located at small village thirunelveli in tamilnadu state.principal deities are siva and parvathy worshiped as papanatheswar and ulagammai respectively.temple located at the banks of river Thambirabarani.108 sivalingams is one of the peculiarity of here.the gopuram of the temple in very high is about 80 feet.inside the sanctum shiva worshiped as papanasanathar in form of a lingam,image of parvathy devi located towards west direction.there are three temple ponds named papanasa theertham,agasthya theertham and kalyani theertham.peoples visit this temple to wash away all the sins.

According to hindu mythology ,during the marriage of shiva and parvathy there are lot prominent peoples reached at kailasa to participating the holy event and saw them.but sage agasthya muni and her wife lopamudra could not get a chance to see the ceremony.they become very sad,agasthya prayed to lord shiva at this place,he appeared in wedding posture in front of them and also blessed them.as per another myth of hindus,king of deva lord indra killed the son of asura guru sukracharya,indra come in contact with the consequences after killing a brahmin,he moves around all over the world,finally he reach papanasam to performing penance,the place come to be known as papanasam.also the shrines of agasthya and his wife lopamudra present here.

Temple opens morning by 6’0 clock and to 1.00 pm,evening rituals from 4.30 pm to 8.00 pm while it is open full day during festive days. chittirai month is very special for devotees because brahmotsavam festival celebrated during that month which lasts 10 days.other important festivals hosts in this temple are thai poosam,shiva rathri and agasthyar marriage etc,the nearest railway station is thirunelveli and also bus station is here with a distance 50 km.madurai is the closest airport to the temple.Tamil nadu archeological department declared the temple as a monument.
