Mahabaleshwar Temple is a holy shiva temple located at Karnataka have an equal prominence as the varaanasi, the Mahabaleshwar Temple is located at gokaranam of Karnataka state which built by following the dravidan style of architecture, is built around 4th century. the temple represents pranalinga which means the reality of God which can be captured by the mind. this also known as athmalinga or shivalinga. it considered as one of the main shiva temples in south India. this is one of the seven sacred shiva temples in Karnataka is also known as mukthikshethrams. this is famous for hosts the ancestral rites for the souls after the death of humans.

The holy place is located at the shore of arabian sea, it surrounded by five beaches situated near to the location. according to hindu mythology the athmalinga brought by ravana got struck here and his efforts to extract it resulted in his throwing the coverings of the athmalinga to dhareswar, gunavantheswara, murdeswar and shijjeshwar temples. Ravana cannot extract the athmalinga from the ground again at last he determined that linga as too strong called mahabala. The athmalinga of lord shiva is worshiped in mahabaleswar.

Mahabaleswar temple is the highlight of gokarna, the meaning of gokarna is ear of the cow, it situated between gangavalli and agnashini river mouth and it look like the ear shaped meeting of two rivers. another legend says that the place got its name by lord shiva emerged from the ear of a cow.
