A popular pilgrim center in northern Kerala got the world attention by conducting a mass festival famous as kottiyoor vaishakha mahotsvam. it has some resemblances with the the kumbhmela. the festival is organizing two kshethras together which are called akkare kottiyoor and ikkare kottiyoor. the main feature of the event that lasts for 28 days. vaishakha mahotsavam usually falls in malayalam month idavam and from 28 days of may to june every year. both the temples take part in the festival is located at the banks of bavali river in kannur. akkare kottiyoor and ikkare kottiyoor are the two equal parts of this ceremony.
Thruchherumana is the temple complex which situated at the western banks of bavali river known as ikkare kottiyoor and a temporary temple complex at the eastern bank which is called akkare kottiyoor. the annual vaishakha mahotsvam is conducting at akkare kottiyoor, the main peculiarity of this temple which opens only for the festival day. the prime deity of the both the temples are lord mahadeva. akkare kottiyoor is famous for doing poojas only in festival days on a self manifested idol but the daily poojas performed in the temporary structure at ikkare kottiyoor.
