Chamakkavu Devi Temple was a Buddhist pilgrim center in early days located at venmony of alappuzha district. now this is served as a durga temple for the devotees it also known as shrgakavvu devi temple because this this was transformed into a vishnu temple after the age of Buddhist. the name shramakkavu transformed into chamakkavu and now this ambalam is known as chaamakkavu ambalam. it located in a small and a beautiful village near to mavelikkara. chamakkavu devi kshethram located at the banks of achankovil river. the star attraction of the temple is the kettukazcha festival conducts annually at the temple.
Kettukazhcha is the annual chariot festival in the destination, this is a colorful festival ever in the village, it usually falls in september, a pair of bulls are the highlight of kettukazhcha, they are very big in size, each bulls were pulled on the carts, so that it called chariot festival. the bulls are very tall and looking very colorful. the annual chariot festival called the kettukazhcha , this event is common in most of the temples in south kerala. cahamkkavu devi temple has a great influence of Buddhism, karumadikkuttan temple and the granite statue is the example of such good things.
Here the temple rituals are same as the all durga temples in kerala, it open at 5’o clock in the morning, close at 8.00 pm after hosting all daily rituals. Mavelikkara is the nearest city to the temple which is about 13 km from the destination. it have facilities of both train and bus services to connect other cities. private bus services are easily available from Mavelikara to locate at the spot. the nearest airport is at trivandrum at a distance of 120 km.
while visiting sharngakkavu ambalam don’t forgot to bring feeds to the monkeys, this is one of the specialty of chaamakkavu. you can bring banana, biscuit , peanuts etc to them. there is a large number of monkey’s in the kavu, it’s an ideal hindu pilgrim center to bring kids.
